I really do enjoy the cold weather. It seems so nice when the sun comes out and the colours of the plants and the flowers are so vivid.
My garden is growing really well. I play the radio for the veggies on the weekend, they listen to sports talk, and I tell them how well they're growing every day.
Some rabbits got into the vegetable patch, under the fence, and chewed the bottoms of some of my pea plants. I don't think there's too much damage, and I've closed the gap they snuck in through. I didn't realise, when I started talking to them, that their destruction would feel a little bit more personal because of that. I feel like they bit my mate I talk to over the fence every day, the rude little beasts.

Whatever was stealing my strawberries must have been sitting in my pot plants as well, and some little strawberry plants are popping up here and there. Life really is all swings and roundabouts, I guess.
I've transferred some of them into little pots and brought them in to protect them from the cold, using the bathroom window-ledge like a little greenhouse. I also have a little tomato plant that came up amongst my spinach and the potted ivy I bring in for the winter, so it is getting a little crowded in there, and is likely to get even more so before spring. As they say in Swedish, if there's room in the heart, there's room in the arse :)

That concludes today's flora and fauna report.

Yes, indeed, I've added a few giant sunflowers to the living situation. They are in an egg-carton, hopefully I can just plant them out in the cardboard cups in a few weeks time. I didn't want them to be damaged by frost, but if I wait too late in the year to plant them the heat will curb their growth, and I want to see how giant these giant sunflowers are.
Speaking of giants, that is what my little tomato plant has become in these few short weeks.

Originally there were two, as the picture shows, but one didn't survive. I feel very pleased that the other is growing so well. Seeing it every day, I didn't notice it as much at first, and then I slowly started to say: Wait a moment, weren't you just a tiny little guy I found under some spinach? Looking at these two pictures together is amazing.

My little tomato plant is now extremely tall and has flower buds. My peas, on the other hand, were at the end of their life. So over the weekend I pulled out the peas, there were more left on the vines than I thought and I have a box of them in the fridge now, and I put a planter box for the tomato in their place. It felt very strange to pull them out after talking to them every day for months.
I put some strawberry seedlings in the planter box with the tomato, I hope that they will provide some ground cover, fingers crossed that they don't grow too big and crowd it.
I also planted some green beans and flowers. Some california poppies, inside the veggie patch so that the rabbits can't eat them, and some more sunflowers, planted direct this time. The sunflower seedlings I started growing inside have been planted out for a couple of weeks now, and haven't grown much yet, but they look strong and healthy.

I bought some multi manure and got to walk around with a bag of it, delivering presents to all of the plants like a rather smelly Father Christmas. A fairy poo-mother. It's good that everything is good to something, welcomed by something.
Speaking of which, I found some apple seedlings growing in my compost. I pulled them out and put them in a pot. I'm sure I won't be able to grow full apple trees, if I had the room to do that I would probably buy a young tree at a nursery because I don't know much about apples except... that they can be a bit tricky, to put it simply.
I thought it would be interesting to observe them and how they grow, though, so that's what I'm going to do.
